Rouzif Rasheed Moopan

Final year MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, Incoming Senior Associate at Boston Consulting Group

The four years I spent at the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras was pivotal in my life. A variety of interdisciplinary courses, state-of-the-art facilities and a wide array of resources helped me learn effectively and hone my problem-solving skills. More importantly, constant support from some of the best professors and an awesome peer group made the experience more enriching and fun.

Kiran Adhithya Ramakrishnan< PhD candidate, Ocean engineering department Place : Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, US< It was an exciting and enlightening experience to study in the Naval Architecture and Ocean engineering department at IIT Madras. The course was unique as it is a niche field and provided a cross disciplinary knowledge. With many eminent professors who provided valuable lessons on and off classrooms there was ample guidance for the students. The department computational facility allowed us to not only explore various software but also interact with research scholars that aided our learning. It was exciting to work on the wide array of labs present from the towing tank to the large wave flume. Laboratory classes were fun and enjoyable due to these unique facilities.

Undergraduate life is one of the fondest memories I have. The environment in NA, IITM was both academically challenging and nurturing at the same time. It was a very nice platform for students to express their talent, be it academic or otherwise. All professors were always encouraging students and very supportive. Even as a BTech student we get to do important research activities if we express interest. My studies in NA IITM opened up many avenues and launched my career.

Amrit Shankar Verma
Research Scientist, Ships and Ocean Structures, SINTEF Ocean
My name is Amrit Verma, and I hold a PhD degree in Marine Technology from NTNU, Norway (2016-2019) and have done my postdoc from TU Delft, The Netherlands (2019-2021). Currently, I am working as a research scientist at SINTEF Ocean AS, Norway (2021-current).
I did my M. Tech in Offshore Structural Engineering from Department of Ocean Engineering (DOE), IIT Madras (2013-2015). My experience as a student at DOE has been very rewarding both for my academic as well as professional development. I took many ocean engineering courses at the department which were taught by highly skilled professors. The courses were very interactive, enjoyable and highly structured in nature with many assignments, and this gave me a strong foundation to undertake my master thesis project. Another factor that really impressed me about the department was that as a student, I had access to many state-of-the-art marine research laboratories. This has taught me a very essential aspect of research in ocean engineering i.e., model testing. Throughout my master studies, I found all the faculties and staff very supportive who gave me immense independence when it came to choosing the direction of my master thesis research. I would like to specially mention my master thesis supervisor and appreciate him for all the insightful discussions and support during my stay, which has helped me to grow as a researcher in the last five to six years.

Vishnu Chandrasekharan Nair
Assistant Professor at RGIPT, Raebareli
With immense pleasure I (Dr. Vishnu Chandrasekharan Nair) place on record, the wonderful years I have spent in IIT Madras during my PhD in petroleum engineering at its department of ocean engineering. I cherish the memories of the institute from the awestruck view of its freely roaming fauna and dense forest cover to the rigorous research years under a passionate guide (Dr. Jitendra Sangwai), life was a seamless blend of fresh hopes and well- focussed research activities. Research works, conferences, workshops, industrial projects, awards, and recognitions, whatsoever the institute as well as the department consistently drove me to dream higher and strengthen my skills and expertise. It made me now the Assistant Professor at RGIPT, Raebareli, another prestigious institute of national importance in the field of petroleum engineering, soon after the completion of my PhD. Much blessed to be the part of department of ocean engineering, IIT Madras once and always proud to be its alumni forever.
N. Sakthipriya

I did my PhD in Petroleum Engineering (PE), from IIT Madras with the supervision of Prof. Jitendra Sangwai. He motivated me to be highly focused and get my teeth into various research initiatives. He supported me to be active in student affairs and other volunteering activities.
Life at the PE program is not confined to the department, I also got opportunities to explore a wide range of facilities across different laboratories at IIT-M. Prof. Sangwai also gave me a chance to collaborate with Prof. Mukesh Doble of the Department of Biotechnology.
My lab mates and I used to work day and night in our Gas Hydrates and Flow Assurance Laboratory and we enjoyed every single minute.
My beautiful 4.5 years (Dec 2011 to July 2016), at IIT-M taught me lessons to drive myself in all peaks and valleys. It has offered me the abilities to become a thoughtful person, and shaped my worldview.
Pawan Gupta
Assistant Professor, Pandit Deendayal Energy University
I have joined Ph.D. at IIT Madras in the year 2015. I came here along with my family with a lot of uncertainty in mind because of the diverse culture, language bar, and far from my home town. But, spending a few days at IIT Madras and the facilities provided by the institute which was also extended to my family made me feel very homely. I always feel energetic towards my work because of its lush green and pollution free campus and extremely good working culture. The most important part is that, the laboratories were kept open 24X7, which helped me to complete my work on time. The faculties in the department were always supportive and any official work was never delayed. I have joined this prestigious institution with a strong belief to enrich my knowledge and career. Soon after I submitted my thesis, I landed up in a job at PDEU Gandhinagar through the placement. I owe a lot to IIT Madras.
Abhijit Kakati

I am overwhelmed with the opportunity I got to share my experience about the Petroleum Engineering Programme at Ocean Engineering Department, IIT Madras. I believe the Petroleum Engineering Programme offered at IIT Madras is one of the best in India particularly when comes to research in the upstream oil and gas sector. The department provides its scholars with an exciting and well-resourced environment to conduct cutting edge research. One of the best thing about the Petroleum Engineering Programme is the interdisciplinary support that its scholars obtain from various other departments of the institute. During my doctoral study, I had the chance to closely work with many resourced faculties of the institute and scholars from different departments which helped greatly to enrich the quality of my research. Also, it provides its students immense opportunity to visit many top-ranked universities across the globe as a visiting research student through faculty research collaborations or as part of a joined degree programme. The department has given me a chance to learn and grow beyond my expectation for which I am forever grateful.
